Korean Cultural Centre India First Online Exhibition “Belle du Jour”

On 21st June 2021, Korean Cultural Center India(KCCI) held its first online exhibition through zoom. The name of the exhibition is "Belle du Jour" by artist Guruvinayak Singh Budhwar. Belle du Jour translates to 'Beauty of the Day' and the theme can be found in Guruvinayak's artworks. Through this exhibition, the artist tries to rekindle hope and instil positivity into the viewers.

Belle du Jour showcases 26 artworks of the Guruvinayak Singh Budhwar on the virtual exhibition. Through zoom meeting, he took the viewers around his dreamscape, virtually, explaining his artworks one by one together with his thoughts. As per the artist, he hopes every viewer who comes to see the exhibition takes away an emotional expression that resonated with them. Artist expressed himself using surrealism because that gives license to be the rule of common understanding, science, nature, and all mundane things. He uses this technique to express how there is a general subconscious that resonates with everybody and try to make the frequency too audible through his art.

You can read and hear the details of the artwork by clicking on it.

Moreover, Out of 26 artworks, 2 of his works are inspired by Korean elements. The first one is "Gwaenchanha" and another one is "Jeong".

Gwaenchanha
This painting represents the crow, symbolizing misfortune, death and dark news. The sides of the painting say "It's alright" (in Hangeul) as a way of saying that when the crow comes, the thing can become better still. In the end, it will all be alright.

Jeong
These styles of paintings cover a more raw and carnal human expression on the sides and my representation of it in middle. This painting is called "Jeong" which cannot really be put into a simple definition, I have tried to express using the bird crane. Which compliments the essence of the word expresses purity and longevity. This is to show that passion and love may go on forever.

The artist ends his virtual exhibition with a Q&A session where viewers asked him questions ranging from his inspiration for artworks to the appreciation for his depiction of surrealism through which viewers felt connected.

Belle du Jour by Guruvinayak Singh Budhwar is on view till August 21st, 2021 at KCCI virtually.
